I have been through many trades: in my twenties I ran an internet cafe in a county town, staying up all night tending the shop, selling liquor downstairs and saving my first pot of money; then care-pile operations, where the window opened fast and closed just as fast; years in e-commerce, seeing both the madness of blowout sales and the panic of warehouses stacked full; later I ran my own community group-buying business, staring at delivery dashboards at two or three in the morning, haggling with suppliers for a few cents of margin; finally I traded futures and tasted overnight swings that nearly gave back everything I had earned.

After all those years, the biggest lesson is: when things go well, people drift; when things go wrong, people fall apart. Money is never finished earning, but the heart can be drained. One period I was especially worn out, and I happened to hold a crystal bracelet a friend had given me — and I suddenly calmed down. Hard to say why — just that, in that moment, having something real in your hand slowed you down.
